Homeschoolers LOVE the GED and many homeschoolers choose to get a GED® credential in South Africa, as an alternative to a school grade 12 certificate. This option suits the home education lifestyle very well.
The online course is self-paced and allows you more flexibility than other options.
Instead of prescribed courses, homeschoolers who choose the GED® have the freedom to choose their own curricula and study materials, until they are ready to prepare for the GED® Tests.
This means that, unlike students who choose to write the South African National Senior Certificate for matric or other international school examinations, they do not have to take prescribed courses of study for the three years that it takes to complete grades 10-12!
They can pursue other courses, included career-oriented courses, while they are preparing for the GED® or after completing their GED®.
The GED® homeschool grade 12 equivalent* enables families to continue with their own unique high quality courses of study, until such time as a candidate is old enough and academically ready to start preparing for the GED® tests.
In addition, the GED® credential is a high school equivalency* that opens the doors to future opportunities for homeschoolers.
What to do before the GED®
Since there is no prescribed curriculum to follow to prepare for the GED® you can give your children a unique, customised education and let them pursue whatever interests them.
Since the GED® tests four subjects, it makes sense to encourage your children to develop their skills in those subjects. This article has some recommendations of homeschool curricula: What to Do Before the GED®

Homeschoolers study further with a GED®
Some homeschoolers have applied to universities, both in South African and abroad. The universities accepted them to study for degrees, if they met the prescribed admission requirements. Private colleges have also accepted GED® graduates to pursue technical and vocational courses.

The eldest three of her six children have chosen to write the GED® instead of a traditional South African matric. They assist her with administrative tasks of running Online GED Prep. The others are likely to write the GED® too, when they are older.
Shirley understands the dynamics of home education and the challenges that families face. She is a home education consultant and she can answer your questions or at least help you to find answers to any questions you may have.
*SAQA (the South African Qualifications Authority) has evaluated the GED® and found the National Senior Certificate as its closest comparable qualification. As with any kind of matric or high school credential, there is no guarantee that a GED® graduate will be granted exemption from USAf, nor that a university will accept his/her application, as there may be other selection criteria too.
